Mission

We will research, design and build a Mobile Solar Charging Station. The station’s primary intended use is to act as a recharging station for UC San Diego’s Electric Utility Vehicle Fleet, numbering in at about 300 utility vehicles. The station’s secondary purposes are to:

  • provide power for consumer electronics
  • increase awareness of solar technology and environmental concerns among UC San Diego’s student population
  •  provide a platform for drawing all of San Diego’s interest in sustainable technology, environmental problems, and ESW-UC San Diego’s commitment and capacity to play a role in global sustainability.

In addition to these goals, we see this project as a prototype for a more advanced system that can be used to train people in solar panel handling, wiring and programming. We also see the Solar Slider’s potential as an emergency power generation platform.


Solar Slider News

The Solar Slider project has finished!

Our 1.9kW mobile solar charging system is completed and ready for use. The system is currently being put to use in a SAIC project site in Brawley, CA. We’ll see how our system performs in the harsh desert conditions.

Once it returns, we plan on performing further testing on our electrical system and finishing our final project report.

We’re currently also working on designing and programming a data logging system using an arduino and raspberry pi.

 

Goals

1. Build a functioning charging station using photovoltaics
2. Station must be completely off-grid
3. Station should provide a peak of 1.5 kW of power
4. Station should be mobile such that a small vehicle can tow it around campus
5. Station should be mobile such that it is legally and physically road-worthy

  • Safe and dependable 2kW pure sine wave inverter capable of powering everything from laptops to refrigerators to cotton candy machines.

  • Custom hydraulic system for changing the angle of the system to get maximum efficiency during various times of the year
  • Sturdy and weatherproof design. Perfect for use in disaster zones, off grid environments, and large events and festivals
